Suspense is a state or condition of mental uncertainty or excitement, as in awaiting a decision or outcome usually accompanied by a degree of apprehension or anxiety. Suspense is a crucial characteristic of the thriller genre as it gives the audience a feeling of excitement mixed with anticipation anxiety. The feelings develop from unpredictable events that the narrative displays which causes the audience to wonder about what is going to happen next.
-Close ups - to convey the characters' facial expressions which develops on how they are feeling.
-Extreme close ups - demonstrates fear and attitudes portrayed by the character but in deeper detail. Tracking shot- to make the audience feel like they are placed with the character in the scene, building the suspense, tension and excitement. -Wide shot- to illustrate the setting/environment which can show the loneliness of a character or the scariness of their surroundings. High/Low angle - the high angle displays the vulnerability and weakness of a character. The low angle shot presents the power and control a character has. -Establishing shot - directly focuses on where the characters are. For example, a haunted house which then links to the connotations of ghosts and the apprehensive atmosphere. A Thriller is an exciting, suspenseful play or story, especially a mystery. They heavily stimulate the viewer's mood, giving them a high level of anticipation, heightened expectation, uncertainty, surprise, anxiety or terror. Films of this genre tend to be adrenaline-rushing, gritty, rousing and fast-paced.
Features in Thrillers: - Surprises&Twists - Plays with the viewers mind - Quick cuts/change of angle - Music to add tension - Lighting to create shadows - Mirrors - Stairs - POV of killers - Flashbacks - Making the audience think. The typical locations for thrillers depends on the sub genre. For example, if it is a horror thriller, we expect to see an abandoned, haunted house in an unknown area whereas in a crime/mystery thriller, we would see a police station and the scene of a death which could be set in a little village with a small, close community. Overall, we felt that the preliminary task should have been less complex as our story line caused the video to be too long. Therefore, we had to cut it down so the audience did understand the full plot. We managed to save our production with the editing as we were able to use a wide variation of effects to polish it off. If we were to do it again, we would use a different setting as you could hear background noises from other adjoining classrooms which disturbed the overall sound of the task. Camera shaking was involved which was due to the difficulties we experienced with the tripod however, for our main task we will adjust the tripod so the movements on the camera are fluent and continuous causing our finished production to be flawless. Chiefly, we believe we still managed to confine to the brief which was having shown the 180 degree rule, shot reverse shot and the match on action within our filming. The filming was cut down considerably due to over filming which meant we lost a significant amount of our story line. The cuts and editing in the film gave it a fuller content and therefore, the plot became more intriguing to the viewer as it was fast moving and had a short duration. During our first experience on Final Cut Pro we found the editing software to be fairly simple to use however there is a lot that we have not discovered for example adding text into a production but we can add effects such as dissolving one edit into the next. We used Final Cut Pro to transform the look of our film into black and white giving it a heightened intensity and a better quality finish. We found it hard finding how to transform the presentation into black and white but we used the desaturation effect. Next time, we will use a wider variety of camera angles to portray the different meanings behind them. We would also find better quality costumes and props that will make the cast look more realistic and in character. Instead of filming the production over one day we will take time in our main task to film it over several days. This will give us the chance to use the correct location and timing throughout the day. We understand that in our next production we have to refine the camera shots as the overall look of the production was amateurish.
EQUIPMENT The equipment we will be using is the camera XM2 (shown on the left) as we feel this will be easy to use as we have camera phone and have previous experience filming but not to this degree. We will also be using Final cut pro which we are very nervous about doing as we have never used this software before or had a lesson on how to function it. The final thing we will be using is Garage band which Felicity has used before however the other members in the group haven't, so we have some experience with the software.
