Shutter Island
Non-diegetic Non-diegetic music is when music or sound effects are played during the scene but the characters cant hear it, only the audience can hear it. During shutter island violins were playing. it was played in high and low pitches, this was to build suspense in the scene and show the audience that something bad was going to happen. Using the non-diegetic sounds made the atmosphere of the scene more tense, this suggested to the audience that something bad was going to happen. Diegetic Diegetic music is when sounds effects are in a film and both the characters and audience can here it. In shutter island there were a lot of diegetic sounds for example; the cars driving down the road next to the main characters. There was also birds chirping in the rustling trees, gates creaking as they opened for the car. You could also slightly hear the heavy footsteps of some of the characters. During the opening sequence a man was holding a gun, ready to fire, you could hear the click when the man set the gun up ready to fire. Friend Request Non-diegetic At the beginning of the movie Friend Request there were no non-diegetic sounds. However, half way through the opening sequence while the professor questions students about a suicide tense music starts to play. It starts quietly and begins to get louder and louder. the camera shot zooms into a girls face and at this point the professors voice begins to drown out and non-diegetic gets even louder. Suddenly you can hear a sharp high pitched sound and the screen fades into a plain white screen. The scene changes and the non-diegetic sound that plays is more happier and upbeat. this shows the audience that the scene from the open sequence was from a different time, either from the past or in the future. Diegetic In the opening sequence of the film you can hear leaves rustling in the wind, you can also hear birds chirping and flying through the trees. As the scene goes on, it is moved into a university lecture room, you can hear quiet chatting between the students as they walk through the door. You can hear the door open and close from the students coming in. You can also hear the footsteps of the students as they walk into the classroom and walk to their seats. As the professor walks into the room, he begins to talk loudly to the students. As he is talking to the class, you can hear other students whispering in the background, then his voice beings to drown out and non-diegetic music begins to get louder

from beginning to end the main character shows signs of a disturbed mental state because of his erratic movement. he appears to be searching around his room frantically, because he's moving around frantically it shows that he is looking for something very important to him, not caring about what he destroys. In the end of the sequence, he finds the object which is his journal titled "mood composition". This shows how valuable his mood journal was to him and places importance on his mental state; people who write journals generally do it to let their feelings out. As he is reading his journal, the camera swirls inwards, almost as if he is falling into the book or an alternative universe. Again, emphasising his unstable mind, reality and perception of the situation. the opening sequence of deja vu is seemingly quite happy as there are families all smiling and laughing together it generally has a happy atmosphere, however the non-diagetic audio contradict against the visual. its almost creepy and mysterious and slightly sinister.
The 2 films I analysed were “Along Came A Spider” and “Silence Of The Lambs”. Collectively, we chose these because they both have good story lines and are very well known.
In the opening scene, “Along came a spider” used different camera shots to capture what the character is doing. In the film they show the location (Virginia Falls Dam 2 miles). They show the Protagonist (the women) and Antagonist (the man) together in the car. She must work for the FBI as she had an earpiece on listening to another agent. This type of secrecy is a typical convention of thriller films. A varied range of different angle of shots let the viewer know what is going on. The road the car is driving on is very quiet with nothing around them (almost like deserted/isolated land). This suggests the characters are all alone, setting the scene up for something creepy happen. The 2nd movie we chose was Silence Of The Lambs, the film’s opening scene is features one character. The character is running through a misty forest giving the audience a sense of drama, as well as the camera angles follow her through her journey through the woods. The Camera focuses on her breathing. This creates questions in the viewer’s head. The camera angles show a military course she was doing, which shows she is active/has a high level of fitness and is able to run away from possible dangers. At the end of the first scene the camera shows aboard with words saying “Hurt, Agony, Pain, Love”. These are strong words. Making the audience think of strict conditions throughout the course. Both films hold mystery, and questions to be answered. Eleanor. Don't Breathe Opening Sequence
Opens with production names, ambient sounds and the production logo. The first setting is a town - trees and a large house (America?), more ambient sounds to match the surroundings. the first people who are seen are a man and a woman, the woman has seemingly been abused, which makes us wonder what has happened? the man who appears to be old is dragging the young lady by her hair down the street. this makes the viewers question what has happened. then the title page appears, duration of the opening: 2 mins 40s the opening scene then shows a flashback, there's not many sounds apart from dialogue, sound effects and diegetic sound. the flashback shows three people; two men, young and older and a young woman. they are shown breaking into a house(robbery) non-diegetic music, heart racing the woman is taking items and trying on female clothes, the youngest man is also taking items, the eldest smashes things and trashes the house. the shots used are; -close ups -extreme close up -overhead shot -long shot -two shot A Thriller is a broad genre. It can be found in film and television, and literature. Thriller is a wide genre holding many subgenres within it. Using different moods in Thrillers chosen by the producer or author this may heighten the viewers or reader’s feelings to grasp their interest into the genre even more.
Thrillers aim to keep the audience “on edge”. They do this as the plot builds to the twist if there is one. The thrillers often use plot twist, cliff hangers and red herring scenes to mislead the audience. A thriller movie often is an antagonist driven plot and features a protagonist to save a living thing, whilst overcoming lots of obstacles Many people mistake thriller movies as horror films as the two are quite difficult to distinguish apart, but once you know the difference it makes it much easier to tell them apart. Eleanor This video was made to allow us, as a group, to understand multiple filming techniques and angles. Two of us were "starring" in the clip whilst two of us were filming and directing, however every group member had input in how everything worked. We kept to using the simple filming techniques to create a successful clip. The techniques we used during filming were establishing shots, close up shots, match on action shots, a reaction shots, a long shot, filming a conversation, and the 180 degree rule. Our clip was about two girls talking about one of their boyfriends and how they are going through a 'rough patch'. As a group we learnt how to work together, how to use a camera, and filming different shots. Next time, we have agreed that there needs to be much more communication, as after filming we had discovered that different shots were filmed with different orientations. This lessens how professional the clip is. One member of the group said that filming the 180 shot was difficult because keeping the camera steady whilst moving to film raised a few issues, however we managed to overcome it. Also background noise was a problem, as we chose to film outside. This meant that planes and wind was heard easily. We chose SHEE as our production name as S, H, E, E are the first letters of our first names and because we are all female.
