In order to gain more knowledge on how a thriller is represented in different forms of media I have decided to analyse different thriller posters. This 'Regression' poster is a foreign poster and it clearly is a thriller as it consists of a young woman who looks distressed, therefore implying that she is the protagonist, as the protagonist experiences a high level of stress at the climax of a thriller. Also possibly revealing to the viewer that this is the setting where the problem takes place. Emma Watson's face is not fully revealed as half of it is hiding in the shadows, this could imply to the viewer that she has a dark, dangerous problem she has to solve. The fact that she seems to be looking over her shoulder highlights the old, shabby looking barn in the background of the poster. Additionally the setting of the house is very dark and gloomy, using the combination of the tall, black trees behind the house and the moon that is slightly breaking through the grey, cloudy sky, making a perfect setting for a thriller. All of these aspects come together to make the viewers think that 'Regression' is a thriller, because of the connotations of black and dark being danger, anger and death. Furthermore implying that there is someone or something that is threatening to kill the protagonist. A wide shot has been used to represent the different aspects that are involved in the thriller, one being the problem that the protagonist faces and the feeling the protagonist has towards the problem. The text and title on the poster is very sharp and thin in shape, which could give the audience the impression that there is something threatening the existence of the characters, as the connotations of sharp are weapons or sharp objects(e.g. knives) which impose a possible threat in physically harming people. However some audiences may look at the white title and think of purity, but the only reason why white has been used is to show a contrast between the black and white colouring of the poster to make the writing stand out. The fact that the text is structured so that it surrounds the barn doesn't only highlight the barn, but also the fact that the regression(degradation) of the protagonist maybe relying on whether she enters the barn or not. The technical media language that has been used that reveals this film to be a thriller is the fact that the protagonist is wearing a jumper, which represents her as a stereotypical woman as women tend to be more sensitive to the cold, hence why she is wearing a jumper. The fact that she feels cold makes the viewer realise that the setting is cold, dark and creepy making them feel uneasy like a thriller should do. Comments are closed.
