I chose to analyse this past students work because it really interested me as I like the music, shots and plot that is in it. This work got an A* and I feel that analysing this work will help me to achieve a higher grade as I will see what sort of standard I need for my work. (click 'read more' to see the full analysis) Logo and Institution Analysis of this openingThe logo was the first thing that was in the opening. this logo looks very professional and seems like it would be in a popular blockbuster film and that the 'company' would have lots of experience based of the judgement of their logo. the logo fades onto screen, zooms in, then fades out again. this gives an impression that this film would be suspenseful and mysterious. Already, this seems to me that it could be a psychological thriller opening as they tend to incorporate elements from the mystery or drama genre. Also psychological thrillers are usually set in dark, isolated places and the wall behind the logo here seems like it would be. They picked Lionsgate to 'produce' their film. Lionsgate was suitable to choose because they have produced many thriller films such as: Saw (all 8 of them), The Hunger Games Series, American Psycho etc. As the students chose to make a psychological thriller opening, Lionsgate was good choice because they have a lot of experience with most of the thriller sub genres. The background of this logo also looks like it has been colour corrected in an editing software to fit in with all the other scenes in the film. this creates an even colouring and sensible colour palette to make the audience of the film feel like it fits in. the Main colours already seem to be blue, black, white, red and grey which make gives a dark and isolated atmosphere as these colours connote a sad, lonely, frightening and isolated feel. Micro-element analysis Camera the first 2 shots used are close up panning shots of body parts of a girl, before you see the close up shot that zooms in of her head with blood on meaning that she is dead. The colours in the shot confirm the idea that i got from the logo that the colour scheme/palette for this opening was blue, black, grey, red and white as she has red shoes and red blood n her head, she has blue jeans on and a white and navy blue stripped shirt on. The shots also look like a blue/cooling filter has been added to make it easier to keep to this colour scheme.
The next shot is an extreme close up of the girls face as she shoots up from bed. The camera is kept still in this shot which shows the her surroundings are now calm. This takes the audience out of the feeling that she is dead because she is quite clearly not. The shot after then is a wide shot. the camera is still, again connoting that it is calm. This wide shot is used to show her surrounding and emphasise the calm. During the opening sequence, I noticed that there was a lot of close up an extreme close up shots to show the girls emotions. Considering that the main theme of most psychological thrillers is the main characters thoughts and emotions, this is very effective. The only time wide shots were used is when they wanted to show the audience what sort of surrounding she was in to contribute to certain questions and emotions. Mise-en-Scene
Black connotes death and evil things. When the audience sees the girl all black following the main character, it is very obvious that she is danger and up to no good. The girl who is not in all black, does not see the girl following her which builds suspense for what's to come. EditingThere is a lot of match on actin in this opening All of them flow nicely and make sense. This make the opening less jumpy and makes the audience focus on what's going on more than any big action which is more common in psychological thrillers. Some examples of match on action is hen she goes down the stair and arrives at the bottom. it flows from one another but you would expect that at that point in the opening from any film. A part where you would not expect the editing to flow for effect of suspense would be when you see the girl in black behind her. The match on action still flows nicely when she is walking and when she turns around. Although it still flows nicely, the shot duration gets shorter and creates more suspense for the audience SoundThe music used in this opening is called December Mornings by Clemens Ruh. This is soft piano music and sounds very creepy when put to this setting. It has very quiet notes throughout the song but has an odd string of very loud ones which keeps the audience interested and in suspense. During parts of the opening where there is more to focus on with what's happening, the music gets quieter. This is good because psychological thrillers can be difficult to keep up with at times. This is something that we need to focus on because we are also doing a psychological thriller.
