When reviewing our rough cut a couple more times we received further feedback on where we could possibly improve. We have decided on re filming out bed scene because at the moment it looks as if it could be a trailer for a film production instead of an opening sequence because of the scattered use of shots. We tried to experiment with different shots which didn't lead off from each other very well.
The credit sizing don't match very well either so we will be adjusting them so t hat they come across a lot clearer and slower so the viewer also has the chance to read them .Another thing we need to edit is the speed of some of the scenes so they aren't seeming to rushed. Eventually we also had to change our actor as the original one was unavailable due to personal reasons. This is the rough cut of our opening sequence of our film Psychosis. We have put two of our scenes together without the titles involved to get an idea of where we need to improve.
We spoke with our teacher who gave us feedback on where we were lacking where we needed to be with the editing as well as filming. We originally had a scene where there was a calendar which said 'Therapy Today' which we took out as it was rather shaky and didn't fit what we were expecting. Another point was that we had a shot with a hand going into a different angled shot of the hand which we were told was too much as well was shaky. This is why we removed the one and kept the other shot of the girl's hand in bed. We had to take out other areas if the hallway scene as we were told they were too dark and unclear. Other than that we were pleased with the outcome of the rough cut and took on board and went with some of our feedback. Our group used garage band to hear some of the sounds that we could use in our opening sequence. This has given an accurate guideline for what we would like to involve in our opening sequence. Most of the sounds are very dark and eerie which gave us a lasting impression which we would want the audience to feel. There is a variety of different sounds such as screaming and piano accompaniments which are slow as well as others being fast paced and spine chilling.
These are videos of three people that we asked on what hooks them up to thrillers. From these videos we can tell that that people around the age of 16 do like thrillers which is good because the target audience for our thriller would be 15 and over.
Mise en scene
Setting &props: The setting of the opening sequence is held in a parking space, parking spaces are often used in thrillers as they are very hidden. Parking spaces are always an area where there are not many people walking and so it is not a very public space so criminals know that they can commit a crime there as there are not many people around and so the young boy is on roller skates when it is illegal. The boy is also holding dynamites this could be a representation that the boy is young and rebellious this also supports the idea that crimes are held in parking spaces due to the lack of people there. Costume and hair: The boy is wearing a hoodie which shows that he is a teenager who doesn’t really care about his appearance and he looks suspicious as if he is about to commit a crime. There are also two men who are wearing a black and white suit which shows that they are quite important and seem to be working for the FBI or police. The suit makes them look very professional and higher class than the young boy, the two men are also wearing black sunglasses which makes them look more serious and suspicious. The men wearing glasses could make the audience feel uncomfortable because we can’t see their eyes at one point which could also make us question about their identity. Sound: At the start the music is very eerie and can make the audience suspicious about the surrounding and the boy. From the sound there is a build-up of suspension. There is a change in the pitch of the sound which suggests that there is going to be different actions happening. When there is action happening such as the men chasing the boy there is more of an upbeat sound to keep up with the speed of the men and boy. The idea of the music going faster suggests that there is more action happening than the beginning. Camera: The opening sequence starts with the camera shaking this could show that someone is watching. There are also a very wide shot of the parking space, this could just be to show the area that the boy is in so that the audience can know the surroundings and just to show the space that the is in. Then there is also a wide shot of the boy however it then turns into a mid-shot to show the boy more then it turns into a close up so that the audience can really see the boy’s face and what he looks like. There is also a point of view when the boy is trying to run away from the two men, this is to show the audience where the character is going. Editing: The background music is very well kept with the action of the character so that the audience can keep up with both the music and plot of the story. There is also a consistent continuity in the plot and there is always something for the audience to look at for entertainment. The shot duration are not very long, this tells the audience that every action is happening at a fast pace and time is going faster by each shot. ![]() This is the last location which we will be using; it is the bed where the character would be sleeping. The most suitable time to use this area would be in the afternoon. This area would be suitable because its comfortable for the character and we would have enough space for the camera to film also the bed is right next to the window so we would be able to get very good natural lighting. ![]() This is the second location that we will be using which is the hallway. This is where both our characters will be standing. This is a suitable area for our filming as there would be enough space for the camera and the characters and we would be able to get good natural lighting as the main door would be near the camera so we can get enough lighting. ![]() This is one of the locations which we will use to film. We will be using a bath to put the girl in. The most suitable time to use the bath is during the day as people would normally use the bath at night or morning. As a group we will make sure that the bath is dry when setting our area as it can cause a hazard of someone falling if there was still water. The bath is very suitable to use for our production as it is big enough for a person to fit in and enough space around to set up the camera. Following from our previous post we have asked a few people to fill out the survey for us here are some of the results that we got back. From our survey we have found out that most people watch thrillers often and that most people also like psychological thrillers. This survey really helped us to find out when people would watch thrillers and what they really think of psychological thrillers as the audience opinion would help with our production. The survey has also really helped us with finding out what affects them the most when it comes to watching psychological thrillers as we really want to have the opening sequence to have an effect on audience we have found out that the audience are most affected by a disorientation shots, this helped us to include at least two disorientated shots so that the opening sequence can have more of an effect on the audience. From out survey we have also found out what type of non-diegetic sound we can include most of the answers are that the audience prefer a juxtaposition music this affects our production because it shows that in our opening sequence we need to include juxtaposition music. Overall our findings have been successful and the survey has really helped us to find out what things we can improve in our opening sequence and what the audience might not like or do like. The survey has affected our production because we might need to change some of the diegetic sound for example most people said that they find ticking clocks the most affective in psychological thriller so we might need to include a ticking clock so it can have more of an effect on the audience. ![]() In order to have an idea of where we could possibly go wrong we created a risk assessment so we could resolve any possible problems. This will make things a lot easier in the filming process. Another hazard is the costumes: The costume could get dirtied by the fake blood so this could make things look messy and seem like a horror movie which is what we don't want. We need to be careful of the fake blood on the white dress the younger girl will be wearing. The fact that it could get dirtied is very likely because its a white dress and fake red blood. ![]() This is the logo of Warner Bros; the logo has very original background which is the sky which can draw attention to the audience as it doesn’t have any common colours such as black. As a group we have looked at the Warner Bros logo and decided that we will have original colours and background so that it can appeal more to the audiences. ![]() his is the logo of Disney, as a group we really like the theme font of the name as it looks very appealing to their target audience and not many institutions have the very curvy font that Disney has, as a group we thought that maybe it was a really good idea that maybe we don’t have a logo and just have the name in a very appealing way so that the audience can tell that it is our production just by looking at the way the name is written. ![]() This is the logo for Universal studios which can give us an idea of how we want our logo to be. Looking at the logo our group like the fact that the main bit of the picture is a globe this shows that universal works globally and we also really like the fact that it has white lights behind the globe so as a group we have decided to put at least a white colour as the main colour as white can make the dark colours stand out. Name: We came up with a different company names:
Logos: We have decided that we wanted our logo to be creative, original and to make an impression on the audience and make the audience want to trust our company when watching the opening sequence These are some of the logo we have thought about: We used an online logo maker to create rough ideas of how we want our logo to be, however looking at different institutions we have gotten some inspiration of how we wanted our logo to be and what we wanted as our production name. As a group we have decided to call our institution 'gemini production'. Our logo will be mainly black and white. We will use photoshop to create our actual logo. Looking at the different institutions has really helped brainstorming our ideas because the three companies are very successful so it was very useful to look at what the audience might really like based on the logos which are very well known.
The woman in black is a well-known horror movie which also has a very gothic theme to it. The plot is about a mysterious woman who haunts people in a small town in England, she caused the death of many young children as she lost her young son so she kills little children just by looking at them or being in little children’s presence. The woman in black was originally a book however because of its fame they made it into a movie in 2012. The women in black was distributed by Momentum pictures and its budget was $15 million this shows that a lot of effort was put into making the film by Hammer productions. ![]() This image shows props used in the opening sequence. The camera is really zoomed in because the audiences eyes have to be focused on what the girls are doing. The cups have purple birds on them which emphasises the innocence of the girls. As the colour purple connotes power and luxury. Over this image we can also hear dark mysterious sounds and this could cause tension towards the audience and making the audience feel uncomfrtoble ![]() This is a close up of a doll drinking, this could have an unsettling feeling for the audience as the doll has dark black eyes and a creepy smile which could give the thought of that the children may have a dark side to them. ![]() We then see this doll using a medium close up and the doll is more realistic to a human than the other dolls and this could be unsettling as most people are scared of pot dolls. ![]() This is a long shot of the three girls playing with their dolls pretending to have a tea party. We can also see that the setting is in an attic as there are packed boxes but it is also a play area for the girls. The setting could be in an attic because people are normally scared of attics as it is normally dark and dirty ![]() This shot is the three girls staring at the women in black. The audience don't know what the three girls are seeing and therefor this makes the audience conscience and scared of what they may be looking at. it is shown how the women in black is subjecting the girls and that the women in black is in power and in control of them. ![]() This is an edit of the girls in mid turn of their head looking at the window straight away the audience know that the women in black is telling them to do something. the camera is at an 180 degrees rule, to show the three girls and their surrounding. ![]() The image shows the girls getting up from the tea party as thats what the some in black wants. This can cause effect towards the audience and making them think about maybe something is making them do something dangerous. The first picture on the right side shows that the girl just dropped the tea mud, this shows that the girls don't care about the tea part anymore and they have become angry towards something. and then a jump cut is shown of her stepping on the tea mug as shown on the middle image. the last image on the right side shows one of the girls stepping on the doll, which shows that the doll has no value anymore and their innocence has been taken away. ![]() The image shows a medium long shot while standing by the window, this suggests that the girls are going to jump out the window this could make the audience feel stressed because the girls are still young. the picture on the right side shows a medium close up of the girl opening the window. As they all get on the last step suspense and tension is caused as the audience know what is going to happen whig could be nerve wrecking for the audience. the girls then jump out the window. After the girls jump there is no sound for one second. We can then hear a diegetic sound of the mother screaming "my babies" while also crying this suggests to the audience that the girls have died. ![]() A cut zoom is used when the camera goes back which could suggest that the person who made the girls jump out the window is at the back of the attic. A figure of a human dressed in all black is shown, this gives the audience a clue of ho made the girls jump out the window. the camera then fades to grey then black to tell the audience thats how the scene ended. ![]() This image shows a poster of the film Black Swan. The only colours that there are on the poster is black white and red. The black and white connote that the person is both bad and good ,the black juxtaposes the white colour. The colour white is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and is known for being the colour of perfection as opposed to black white usually has a positive connotation. However black is associated with power elegance, death, evil and mystery. Black is a mysterious colour associated with fear and danger and the colour black also has a negative connotation. There is also a bit of red on the poster which could represent fire, danger and blood however it also represents love and passion. Overall the poster shows that there is both bad and good in the Black swan film however there is also a lot of danger. There are also props which can be used in thrillers to make the film more exciting for the audience. ![]() here is some of the props shown in psycho. The knifes are used to kill characters in the film. This makes the film psycho more scary as death can be frightening for the audience to watch. The sunglasses are used because it connotes that one of the characters is suspicious and that the person does not want to show their whole face, this makes the audience think that the person wearing the sunglasses could be intimidating. ![]() This is a prop used in the movie se7en. The prop is used in the title sequence are sharp dangerous and harmful. they reflect a feeling of insecurity to the audience. This image leaves the audience confused as we do not know what the person is doing with the blade, this is one of the aims of thriller to make the audience think. ![]() These are guns that were used in fast and furious 6. The guns connote that there is a lot of action and fights between people. The guns could also mean that someone was hurt so deeply that a gang of people need to get back at the person. The guns connotes danger and death and that someone in the film is in danger. Costumes are a huge part of a character as the costume can act as a uniform which places the character within a particular group or role. The props allow an authentic sense of place. ![]() This is one of the costumes shown in the film psycho. The blanket represents that the character is cold and alone. however underneath the blanket we can see that the character is wearing a suit which shows that he does look smart and presentable. the black and white colours emphasise the fact that the character seems alone. ![]() This image shows three costumes in the film se7en. In this image we can see three uniforms between three men. We can see that the two men on the left and right have a police related job as one of them has a badge which could show that they are undercover. both men look smart and it looks like they are well paid because it looks like they can take care of themselves. The fact that both men are wearing black connote that they are serious. there is a juxtaposition between the 2 men and the middle man the juxtaposition of the red overall with the black suits emphasise the difference in status between the characters . The colour red also connotes danger, blood and death which underpins the characters nature. ![]() This is a poster picture of fast and furious 6 and it shows all the main costumes of the characters. All the characters are wearing dark colours which represents that they could be dangerous. The two front men are wearing clothes which makes them seem rough and as if they are always fighting against someone as the front man is holding a gun. Most the characters are also wearing leather which shows the strength of the characters and symbolises the toughness of the characters. We have chosen to film a thriller because we thought it would be something different and exciting to film as we have lots of ideas as to what our story could be when it comes to filming a thriller. Thriller is a genre of novels , films and plays. thrillers are used to have an exciting and scary plot behind them. thrillers use suspense which is a pleasurable feeling of fascination and excitement anxiety can also be built up with from an unpredictable source of entertainment ,tension which is the feeling people get when they feel nervous scared or excited about something that is going to happen and excitement which is the feeling of great enthusiasm to heavily stimulate the audience moods giving the audience a high level of anticipation. examples of thriller films include:

What is the shot reverse shot? Shot reverse shot is a techniques used where 2 people are having a conversation, however the audience can only see the face of the person talking. It is shown that the character listening is looking at the person talking. When the character has finished speaking the camera would need to turn to the other person so that the audience can see the face of the character speaking and the back of the head of the person ;listening. Self drawn image of shot reverse shot ![]() As shown on the sketch, the girl who is talking her face is fully shown on the camera, whereas the camera is behind the girl who is listening and not talking and when she starts talking the camera is turned to the other girl, this means that the camera would need to film all of one persons lines and then films the other persons line all in one go and edits them together. ![]() Here is an image we found on google images to give an idea as to how the camera is positioned in an actual making of a film/program. As the male speaks all of his lines the woman is listening and showing the back of her head. This is a youtube video of shot reverse shot shown in a movie. As the male speaks we can only see his face and the back of the females head. This technique is used because it shows that 2 people are having a conversation as it shows whatever the person is saying is important and it shows attention to what the speaker is saying.
