When creating the opening tile sequence I had to render many different sources together being the downloaded un-copyrighted video of the smoke, the 'Echo Studios' logo and the none-diegetic distrusting sound. I did this using Final Cut Express. After playing around with different sizes of the video of smoke, to make it fit the frame appropriately, I added in the other elements. I wanted to create a simplistic opening for the institution but still ensure it reflected the style/genre of films it produced and so i felt that the smoke with the twisted filmstrip was simple yet gloomy, sinister and spectral. The simple monochrome colour palette is a recurring theme throughout our production and we felt it tied in nicely. After rendering all of the factors, I felt that the edit cuts were too sharp and so I played around with different transitioning tools to give a softer effect to mimic the smoke. I ended up using the 'Dip to Colour Dissolve' for a short while at the end and felt that this made the edit look much softer and professional. This is the final piece:

I wanted to add movement to the institution logo to connote mystery and suspense to pre-empt the genre of our productions. I used smoke as I felt it has a wide connotation of mystery which is essential in psychological thrillers. It also suggests freedom, independence and indulgence.
1st shot- Institution logo and name
Non-digietic music will be played throughout 2nd shot- 3 quick shots of a mind board progressing with the murderer admiring his work all in a wide shot. With continuos low key lighting to enhance a dark atmosphere. 3rd shot- Credits, e.g 'produced by..' with a black screen background and white font inc. As well as scribbles and flashes edited in to maintain attention of the audience; making it more eerie and full of suspense. 4th shot- close up of the murderers eyes, moving whilst he works. 5th shot- 3 quick shots of tying pins and maps onto his mind wall. 6th shot- credits as before 7th shot- close up of flashes of suicide photos on the wall. 8th shot-pan down wall showing suicide newspaper clippings 9th shot- credits as before 10th shot-Close up of holding a strand of hair with tweezers and placing into a bag. Quick cuts of sealing the bag and then pinning onto the wall. 11th shot- credits 12th shot- time-lapse of crossing dates off the calendar, linking to the final opening when the date appears at the bottom. 13th shot- quick cuts of close up mug shots of victims and stalker-ish items (scribbles and music becoming more intense, repetition of shots + flashes). 14th shot- close up of tatty red diary, flipping through and focus onto different words. 15th shot- credits 16th shot- close up pan of dead girls hand with blood covering them. Low key lighting. 17th shot- Wide shot of the mind board again, slowly fading out with the title Hidden Within flashing in the middle of a darken background. Sharp noises. 18th shot- Music stops and instead diegetic music of the taps with distant sirens. With a close up of washing his hands covered in blood in the sink. I had a quick look into how effective films were able to make surreal scenes seem very realistic; come to life. Due to our production involving a great deal of editing with quick fast images, they need to have a darkened atmosphere something that would need to be inputed. I Am legend showed how editing can turn a normal looking human into a zombie without the use of makeup. As well as the surroundings, certain elements were added. But with the inspiration coming from American Horror Story's titles to have a similar idea for our opening scene, I found a clip of how and why it was made this way and positive feedback of the effectiveness.
After brainstorming many different props we could use for our production, we decided we had to narrow down the possibilities due to accessibility. We wanted to use the most common conventions of psychological thrillers and so we shortened the prop list to:

Taking inspiration from other psychological, horror and crime thrillers and the codes and conventions used, we decided we needed to brainstorm a prop list in order to create effective mise-en-scene.
Our production revolves around darkness therefore, the one character we are featuring needs to be wearing similar dark, black, mysterious clothes. However, you never see the front of his physique only the back. So the costume is going to be black jeans, black shoes and a black or grey hoody which will always be zipped up and over his head. With this it makes the character have a creepy, unknown vibe about him, also creating an enigma code as the audience will want to watch in the hope that his identity will be revealed.
The shots above are the main locations where our production is going to be based.
The first image of the front of the house is showing the main setting for where our film is based. Houses are often used in psychological thrillers as audiences can identify with the familiarity. The second image is of the front room of where the man will do most of his work. The table in the middle will be useful to put everything on. The use of dark colours on the walls and the reds fit into the mise-en-scene well in order to create a sense of tension. The third image of the alleyway fits well with the codes and conventions of the thriller genre as it connotes potential danger and isolation. The fourth image is of the road which could be used as an establishing shot linking. The fifth location shows a wall which is what we will use to put all the newspaper clippings and photographs on to create mystery. The sink is for when we use a close up of the man washing the blood off his hands. We added music to our animatic storyboard to get a feel of what type of music we will use in our real production.
