Garageband
To create the background music for our opening sequence, we used the software Garageband. Garageband gives a variety of different sounds to choose from, which we used to experiment with to create our very own piece. Along with Garageband’s own sounds, we also used sound clips from our own film shots, such as screaming and dialogue. Our whole group were not sure how to used Garageband, so this was a challenge for us all to try to create our sound clips. Eventually we progressed into making a sound track which was a mixture of clips we filmed ourselves and also clips from garageband. Filming During filming, there were a lot of things our group had to learn. For example, we learnt how to use a Nikon camera, and the features that would be best for the scenes we were shooting. This helped us produce high quality shots. We also learnt how to adjust the tripod to ensure that the shots were level, this helped the camera stay steady. We coordinated our shot times around the lighting of the a day, we filmed dark shots in the evening and lighter shots during the day. Therefore we did not need to worry about using extra equipment for lighting Final Cut Express We learnt how to use Final Cut Express in out preliminary task. Our group were new to it but with some understanding we managed to develop new skills and create our preliminary. We all now know how to edit and create projects to a high level. We learnt how to use effects such as fade in and out, and using tools such as the pen and razorblade. Photoshop To create our production logo, credits and title of the film, we used Photoshop. We had not used Photoshop previously before, so lacked the skills needed to create everything, but with some practice we managed to develop the skills to. ¡While using Photoshop to create our pieces, we used fade in and fade out from Final Cut Express to made our finished piece look professional

Here we have practised on Garageband as we will have to create our soundtrack for our opening sequence using this software. We have played around with layering and varying sounds in order to create suspense.
This is our rough cut which we have created to give us a general direction of where our 2 minute sequence should be heading. We chose a group to specifically show our rough cut so that they can give us successes and criticisms.
The group said that when watching, the story line makes sense and we have a wide variety of shots. However, we needed to swap the first two shots so that the phone torch makes more sense as it is turned on in the first scene, not in the second. Our audience also said that the boyfriend of kelly didnt seem very bothered by her phonecall, however this is expained in the rest of the narrative as the boyfriend actually exchanges her, which is why he is not that shocked that she has been taken. We still have alot of the story board to follow which creates the question of whether we will fit it all in within the 2 minutes. Furthermore, we also got feedback on our actors saying the main characters reaction to being locked in the boot was very realistic. We will use these points to now direct the rest of our opening sequence and make sure that the narrative makes sense in the first two minutes. To make our production logo we used photoshop on a mac. We used different layers and effects to achieve our finished design. We decided to use a glow effect on the words illuminate because it reflects the definition of what the word represents. The black background used helps emphasise the vocal point of the logo which is the title and the light bulb image used. The font is also in black so that the letters did not fade into the light bulb. We agreed that the light bulb was a good image to convey our process of working together asa group. We are constantly coming up with new innovative ideas. For the image we used a pen tool to cut out the background and added an outer glow to the text and image. We used varied opacities so the light bulb image did not overpower the text. After presenting our idea for an opening sequence to the class we were given some positive and constructive feedback comments from both our peers and teacher.
Peers: Many said our presentation was carefully thought out and well explained. They complemented our planning skills and organisation. This was due to us having contingency locations and understudies for the character roles. Our peers liked our storyline and said they would continue watching the film. Teacher: Think about what cameras we want for different shots. For example we may use a Go pro for wide shots due to its fish eye lens. Additionally, the limited cameras available at school need to be shared out evenly so we must organise a schedule to allocate even distribution of camera usage. We also needed to have a better idea about costume for our two protagonist roles. Our original plan was to have them wearing dull worn down clothes but from feedback we can see that they need to fit the brief of their characters role better. However, we were told that our ideas for lighting and sounds are good and fit well with our sub-genre of action thriller. PRIMARY RESEARCH In order to produce our target profile, we gave out a questionnaire to 8 people and also filmed another 10 people asking them 4 questions to form a vox-pop. We then created a target audience profile to determine who would typically watch the style of film we are forming an opening sequence for. The questions we asked in our vox-pop were... 1. Do you enjoy watching thriller movies? 2. What is your preferred sub-genre of thriller? 3. What do you think makes a good protagonist? 4. Do you prefer a race against the clock or a chase? From our vox-pop, we concluded the following results.. -Most people enjoy watching thrillers, with only 2 people saying they only watch them occasionally. -We got an even spread of votes between the sub-genres of horror, psychological and action, with crime being the least popular. With this result we can conclude that people would watch our film as it is one of the most watched sub-genres. -We got a range of answers for the best quality of a protagonist, ranging from them being interesting, having a good background, and also having good morals. The most popular answer which was said by half the people was that the protagonist should be relatable, which we will take into account when filming our opening sequence. -The results was split 50/50 between a race against the clock and a chase. However we will be using the element of a race against a clock as we think it is more exciting. We also gave out a questionnaire which consisted of the following questions 1.Do you enjoy thriller movies? 2.What sub-genre from the list below do you prefer? 3.Do you find it appealing for a film to create tension and suspense? 4.What do you the most important element of a thriller is? 5.What do you like most about thriller movies? 6.What do you find builds up suspense within a film? 7.Would a cliff hanger in an opening scene entice you to continue watching a thriller? 8.What type of narrative do you prefer in an action thriller? The following pie charts show the results.. SECONDARY RESEARCH
To make our target audience profile, we looked on reviews made on action thrillers and who wrote them, and studied one person of each gender in particular. By doing this, we concluded the audience who would normally watch action thrillers, who would therefore watch our piece as well. |
