Most psychological thriller use normal locations to provide realism. The realism they do provide however can be overly theatrical and quite stereotypical of the area or country in which the film is set.
For example, Donnie Darko us set in a suburb in America. In the opening sequence you see the suburb and you see how perfect the ares is with the perfectly cut grass, no traffic, no car horns, complete silence. The house are also perfectly lined up and are perfectly intact. In contrast to this, The Machinist shows the gritty underside of working in a factory. It emphasize the situation and location of the scene. A few examples of typical locations of a psychological thriller is;
Black Swan

Silence of the Lambs

the feedback that we were given for our presentation was mainly positive, from the class we were given positive points like; - 'i like how its in her head' - 'i liked how it cuts off' - 'i like that you have thought about the location' - 'it was very detailed and i liked how you have a backup location and liked how its in her head' and we were also given some negative constructive criticism such as; - 'you should think about your camera shots' - 'think more about the narrative of the rest of the film' - 'you should think about music and sounds' we were also given feedback from our teacher with points such as; - 'you need to decide on your characters'\ - 'think about narrative more' - 'overall it was quite detailed' - 'location was well thought out' Secondary Research- Reviews In order to conduct my secondary research for the psychological thriller, shutter island, I have gone online and found reviews from viewers giving their opinions in what they thought about the film. The reason why I thought reviews would help with our research is because it gives us regular peoples opinions on the film. According to the parents the BBFC would be for age 16 and above as it was a 'very dark and thought provoking psychological thriller with some degree of horror elements'. However, it 'contains good role models and shows you that its worth fighting for life' this could mean that the film may be dark and psychologically scary but has a good story line as it shows 'good role models'. As well as finding reviews from parents, I have found reviews from teens who have watched the film themselves. Some similarities that the parents and the teens shared was the age restriction for the film. The average age rating was for 16+ and they both said that it was very graphic but it had good role models. I found these comments and reviews on https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/shutter-island. I found that this website gave me peoples honest views on the film, this helps me as it shows me what some people like in film, which gives me ideas for my opening sequence. It also helps me identify the target audience for Shutter Island, this then helps me choose my target audience for my opening sequence. However, this website is not very specific as it shows peoples overall view on the film and not just the opening sequence. Another disadvantage is that it doesn't give me a wide variety of peoples opinion on the film and it doesn't give me specific things that i should/should not add in my opening sequence. Primary Research- Questionnaires
I wrote up questionnaires and gave them out to girls in our school and to some teachers to get a variety of different answers. We asked the public what their favourite thriller sub-genre is, why they like thriller films and how old they are. We found out that majority of the people who answered the questionnaire liked psychological thrillers the most, the second favourite was action thriller. We also found out that most people like thriller film as 'its fun to watch' and they like the story line of the film. This helped us find our target audience as we now know what types of people like what type of thriller. We found out that most teenagers around 15-17 years old like pscyholgical and horror thrillers, we also found out that more adults like more action thrillers as it outs them on edge and excites them while they are watching. |
