Having minimal knowledge of our editing program Final cut pro when compiling our footage of the preliminary task together, the standard of editing was poor. You can see this as we have not cut some clips short enough and some cuts where untidy. Since doing this, i have learnt how to successfully edit on final Cut Pro and ensure the finished cut has much as professional look as is possible. I have also learnt how to show a relation between two characters through placing cuts together. This was relation two chactors though placing cuts together . This was vey important because film our genre was horror and we wanted to great a scary atmosphere for our audiences as the girl walked through the park and the other person watched her talk on the phone. Our thriller opening sequence was much more better then from our preliminary task this was because we have put lots of effort in our filming and researching.
The filming took us a longer time then what we have expected we made a time plan on when what times we were going to film however because of the weather it took us longer to shoot and sometimes we had to film it twice so we could get the best lighting and use different angles so we appeal all the connotations of a horror genre. This was different from our preliminary task as we shot it in a small period of time and using our school location instead of outdoors or other locations. From learning from our progression from our preliminary task we have used other locations to film our horror opening sequence so the atmosphere looks scary . The editing also took us a longer time as we were new to the software and longer better effects to add because of our chosen theme (horror-thriller) I believe looking back at our preliminary task we have progressed a lot, we have made massive improvements on our editing skills and sound effects. This was because we have made a great research on our thriller- horror genre which was looking at other films and evaluating the camera skills, the miese- en scene and also at sound affects. As a group we have also analysed our preliminary task and other past As opening sequences. These all benefited us to make a horror thriller opening as we had a clear idea on what we needed to do to get all the codes and the convictions. These are nine frames from our opening sequence. The first frame is our logo, which is called “Nail Biting”. We have made our own logo using special software, we contemplated with: Teeth churning, edge of seat, shaking, screaming etc.. overall we thought nail biting loomed impressive. We looked at some images which given inspiration for our logo. in all of the films the logo is the first thing that is shown at the beginning of a opening sequence. Also we wanted our opening sequence to be professional. The music starts in a soft tone then it gets gradually gets louder and changes in the scenes. The first scene was our production for “Concerion” which has taken a lot of time and thought’s, we have discovered a lot of new ideas and plans for our film. We have researched a lot into the horror genre, we also watched a lot of horror thriller genres so we can get new ideas and learn what kind of camera techniques and editing skills they have used. We took inspiration from horror films such as Parnormal, Touch of Evil, the Exorcist, the Babadook, the Conjurin and modern popular thriller films such as Seven. The second frame we have chose is of the setting. It is a long shot of a park, you could see a big green lane and a bench, this is a stereotypical of a stalking scene found in films. We have studied many thriller films and the codes and conventions that they adhered to and challenged. These included quick edits pan of action and also low-key lighting, these skills has helped us to make our opening sequence much more interesting. By adding a slow pace and fast pace to the film and were consistent with the amount of action going on this engaged the audiences attention. Although this is a convention of thriller films, we decided that in our opening sequence we wanted to challenge this idea and instead use slow pan of action frames. The technique is used in many horror films openings, such as “Panic Room”. It allowed us to focus on certain characters and props within the freeze frames emphaising elements of the plot .In our third sequence we have used a scene of the book which plays a great big role in our film. We have used the quick edits convention, we wanted to take inspiration from 'Seven' in some way as our research showed that it is popular among our target audience. We tried to imitate this effect by combining piano with violins and other classical orchestral instruments but changing there pitch and also adding extra effects such as the electronic instruments. We made sure that the key changes within the piece were synced with the increasing tension in the film, as this added atmosphere to what was happening in the scene. We wanted our audience to engage with our film and we know that music plays a great big role in films. we also wanted our film to take inspiration from the horror genre. our research showed cross, low-key lighting and also quick cuts where popular in the horror genre and we incorporated this into our production. We also found that many thriller films tried to make their films realistic giving the audience the idea that it could happen to them. to imitate this, we set our opening a open park, somewhere that most people will visit on a regular basis and looked normal instead of a old house or a forest. we looked secpcific areas of the park and how the location related with our storyline and from this we took location photographs to help us plan our plot line. Our production follows most crime thriller convections , in order to appeal to a larger target audience which it is 18+ as the film does not suit below younger ages as it has gore in the scenes. We challenged a few conventions and developed them into our own in order to create a unique selling point for our film and to make it stand out from competitor productions on the market. We did this by using a clear time sequence and were we have used a lot of editing. Our production follows most horror thriller conventions, in order to appeal to a lager target audience. we challenged a few conventions and developed them into our own in order to create a unique selling point for our film and to make it stand out from competitor productions on the market. These are the film company logos that we have looked at, we took a lot of inspiration for making are very own logo. We have looked at the different fonts they have used, colours, images and the background they used. These six logos helped us by making sure what a film company logo should have, as it was our first time creating our own. It took us longer as it was our first experience to make our own. These six logos our from famous film companies that we have found, they all look creative and catches the audiences eyes as they have used bright font's and dark backgrounds. From this idea we have made our very own logo which has all of the codes and convections of a horror logo, the logo is bright bold and catches the audiences eyes as we have made sure to make our logo interesting and visual. We could see that we have used bright bold font's and the same dark background like the other logos but we also wanted our logo to stand out. we did this making it 3D effect.
As a group we have used different variety of equipment and software whilst creating our opening sequence.
Including: ( filming ) Tripod ,Canon Camera 5x10 (Editing) Final Cut Express (software) Mac computer (Sound) Garage Band Voice ( dialogue). These were the equipment and software that we have used as a group. Some of the Equipment that we have used was our first time and it took us more time to fully use them however we as a group we were later on confident using all the equipment. my favourite one was using Final Cut Express and Garage Band but i first found them complex to use but later on i was confident enough to help edit the film and the music . Editors in the British Film and Television Industries
We looked at editors in British film and television industries to gain an understanding on our film and what the British film and television industries look like. We wanted to research on editing so we can gain our audiences eye. As we are doing horror thriller we want our film to be interesting and we want our audience to engage with our film. There are a lot of editing skills that we have learned and used, I believe understanding edits have made are opening sequence much more better .We understand why we should use different edits as it makes are film interesting to watch and also attracts are audenice.
We used the approach of viral marketing, via Twitter. Twitter is a popular global social networking service that enables users read and write short tweets. As conglomerates use these approach of advertisement, we crated a Twitter page to advertise our film 'Coercion'.
Music plays an important role in thriller films. While well crafted sound design and sound effects are very necessary in the creation of a film because music touches the emotions , the psyche, the things that you cannot see without music it would be more difficult to follow the emotions up and down of a film. Much more difficult to experience the fear and the tense atmosphere.
This is our backstage of our film, we wanted to feature some scenes that were not featured in our film and show our experiences while we were filming. As a group we all went to our scene (park) to shoot are film and we all had a great experience and learnt a lot of things, such as were we should film it? what time should we shoot it? The mise en scene?
We all had a great time, but there were difficulties that we all faced through shooting of the film.
