The hypodermic needle theory implied mass media had a direct immediate and powerful effect on its audiences. The mass media in the 1940s and 1950s were perceived as a powerful influence on behaviour change. Several factors contributed to this "strong effects" theory of communication, including:
This is an short film demonstrating the hypodermic needle effect after watching a killer movie 'Scream' influences the way in which the boy reacts and the devastating incident that occurred. we had a lesson in class of the different narratives in media we looked at uses and gratifications theory by Blumler and Katz.
Blumler and Katz holds a theory that places more focus on the consumer, or audience, instead of the actual message itself by asking “what people do with media” rather than “what media does to people” . It assumes that members of the audience are not passive but take an active role in interpreting and integrating media into their own lives. The theory also holds that audiences are responsible for choosing media to meet their needs. From this we can apply this to which gratification we will be aiming for. this is the logo for dark castle entertainment which was a production house affiliated with Warner Bros. It made nearly a dozen film from 1999 to 2013 and I decided to include it as our piece shall be a horror thriller and in order to get inspiration for our chosen company, we focused on dark, suspenseful film industries. we looked at two horror logos that would link in to our actual piece. this is the logo for Jerry Bruckheimer productions is a film/television company that has produced many films from 1972 to 2014 including horrors and other genres. i looked at this as it relates to our piece as we are focusing on dark logo ideas and this motion picture logo is quite fast paced and quick but equally dark and scary therefore we took it as a form of inspiration for our logo.
We explored different sounds and iconography that we could inlclude in our piece. Things such as a hooting owl, a creaky door and footsteps. This clip ellaborates on our ideas. This is a mind map of our chosen sub genre displaying the different elements which makes the film horror. This is also a inspirational map for us which also guides what to include in our opening sequence. It also acts as a checklist for our final piece to be appropriate for a horror thriller.
We are introduced with the mise-en-scene portraying elements of a normal american lifestyle. With the pan movement showing the middle class houses, from this it connotes a safe friendly environment, that would typically wouldn't expect any crime happening. Another pan shot is demonstrated as the car approaches in front of the house. From the normal duty of delivering newspapers one house is excluded form receiving by the clip board chart highlights the cancelation of the delivery.Immediately this audience feel a sense of suspense action within the house.A quick edit is used to close up pan movement of the props clean and neatly ordered in a row. This can come across quite odd as the razor, scissors, trimmer, and clamps connotes violent going to happen in the film this also shows the audience that the protagonists is a normal person who has a typical day to day life. We are introduced to the protagonists by a mid-shot of him in the mirror this tells us there is a double side to him. By his approach of changing his identity, by taking his sunglasses of, shaving face and removing contact lenses could create a mystery and tension gripping the audience to continue viewing the film. clearly this shows the audience that he's portraying different identities. Due to his haste action of shaving he immediately cuts himself, this connotes a crime murder happing in the scene. The non-diagetic sound of the music is gloomy to the scene which creates the suspense of the audience. The juxtaposition of the shot of the frames of family photos and Christmas decorations shows the house belongs to a family. I will be outlining the media code and conventions of the thriller 'What Lies Beneath' a swell as analyzing the opening sequence and suggest how sound and camera work are used to portray the elements of a thriller. From this analysis our group will apply some of key aspects in which a typical thriller consists of in to our final thriller open sequence.
From looking at Orphan poster, we can gain an understanding of the different codes and conventions used in a thrillers, and how its illustrated in the mise- en- scene. We wanted to analyse a horror thriller poster and actually focus on the small details in the mise en scene and together as a group figure what they symbolise and how when it comes to creating our thriller poster.
Most teenagers watch films that are based on other teenagers, they like to relate with characters but want to see something different to everyday life happen on screen, this is why supernatural, thrillers and horror themes are popular within 13-24 age groups . Many films and shows that have the same quality to teen expectations have achieved this such as teen wolf and twilight.
teenage audience is are main focus in our film, we want are film to suit the ages between 15-24. Here is a illustration on the target audience we want to aim for. |
