It was easy for us as a group to decide who we wanted to be in our music video. We have chosen a 17 year old girl called Chloe and we have chosen her because Halsey's main target audience is teenage girls so we knew that it would suit the music video well. Chloe is also an A-level drama student who is very confident in front of the camera and also very easy to work and also very mature so this makes our filming process easier and better. We are also using a 17 year old girl called katja. Katja is also in our group. The fact that she is in our group has made it easier for us to film because we know she is reliable as we had discussed her availability whilst discussing when we are going to film. We have used another 17 year old girl because it would make more sense in our music video as the two actresses are friends in the music video. Post by Fatma

As a group we have listed a few locations where we are thinking of filming our music videos. Some locations we have planned to film are:
Forest - A forest has the connotation of being quite scary and reflecting on the title of the song 'haunting'. We would shoot at sunset so the scene is not completely dark. High key lighting would add a "Twilight" effect. To be using forest we do not need permission from anyone as it is a public place so we can use it whenever we want. However with this location there are few hazards for example as it is cold weather outside it can be quite cold and muddy so if we are filming someone could slip. The image on the right shows the bedroom we will be filming at. Shooting in a house location would make the narrative more realistic, following the girls average day-to-day life. For this location we would need permission from the owner of the house to see if we can film at their house. I have texted the person of the house that we are using. With this location there will be one hazard which is the stairs. As we are filming up the stairs with wires on the floor from the ring light, so we need to be careful around the stairs area as someone could fall down the stairs. The image on the right shows the text which i have sent to the person of the owner of the bedroom. Windsor and Eton bridge- We will be using the bridge for one of our scenes. We will be using it because we will be putting flashbacks in our song. The bridge is a good location to set our scene in. A bridge near the river is also where people go if they are upset and also one of the lines in the song is 'I was as pure as a river' this shows that a bridge near the river would have a meaning to the lyrics. For this location we also do not need permission as it is a public area and we can use it at anytime. One of the hazards of this location is that the bridge is made out of metal, and if it rains that day then someone could slip. Studio - Shooting the live performance scenes in a studio will be easy for us to create a realistic mise-en-scene with lighting. We had to ask for the Drama teachers permission to be using her drama studio and we had asked her through the school E-mail. In the drama studio it is going to be quite dark and the wires are going to be on the floor because in the drama studio they have lighting in there so anyone could trip in the dark over the wires. Post by Fatma. When we had decided on a song, we had to ask permission from Halsey to use her song. We messaged her on Twitter using our production group twitter account. This is a screenshot showing evidence of us doing this. Post by Elise
Halsey is an artist that is represented in many different ways. In her music videos she is represented as whatever role she takes on, she is rarely just singing as her. In interviews she is represented as a strong and independent woman who is not afraid of judgement.
In her music videos for Colours, Ghost and New Americana, she is represented in 3 different ways. In the New Americana video, she is represented as a strong leader as in the video she leads a rebellion group and in the end is seen running ahead of the entire group like they are following her. In the video for Ghost, she is very sexualised to meet the male gaze but there is also something very empowering to the video as it shows a lesbian romance instead of the stereotypical heterosexual romances usually seen in alternative pop videos. In this sense, there are parts of the video that are stereotypical and part tat are counter-typical. The video is her and another girl in their underwear in bed together. Some shots include shots on her butts and perfectly made up lips which are some features of the female body that are sexualised most. Although she is portrayed as empowering and strong in the other two videos, in the Colors video she is portrayed as a vulnerable teenage girl. Her character seems very stereotypical until the end where you find out that she fancied the boys Dad instead of the boy. She is never fully or purely portrayed as stereotypical and mainly stays towards the counter-typical representations. She is represented as something fresh and different which is probably why she has gained popularity as fast as she has. In her videos Halsey shows so many different amplified parts of herself which every audience can connect to. In an interview with 'pop justice' she has said that Halsey is just an amplified version of Ashley (who she really is). The audience can connect to amplified versions of an artist as they choose to focus on the parts of themselves that are 'different' but also very generic. This means that she chooses to show the parts of herself that, up until recent years, most celebrities would keep hidden or that the media wouldn't show or endorse. e.g Sex, Power, Vulnerability. These are things that most people have experienced or will experience in their lives, therefore making her relatable to her audience but also making her stand out as many people don't emphasise them. In an article from 2015, Halsey is describes as not fitting 'neatly into a box' as she is half black/half white, openly bisexual and bipolar. The article states that Halsey said that she is an 'Inconvenient Women'. This makes her representation even more counter-typical as some of these things (e.g. bipolar disorder or bisexuality) are things that only a small amount of celebrities are as open about. These types of things are what people in Halsey's target audience are usually going through to. By representing herself as a strong, bisexual, bipolar and biracial woman, she relates to minorities in society. In this interview she also talks about drugs and alcohol which again shows her relatability to others going through the same thing. Throughout the article she is represented as a strong and influential woman. Halsey has also been described as a 'Feminist Icon' for people of her generation. There was been a rise in feminism for the past few years which makes her more relatable again to her audience they most likely believe in feminism. Post by Gina
The video on the left is the professional, official music video for Birdy's song, "Wings", and the video on the right is a music video for the same song, but was done by past student for A level. The topic of the two music videos are completely different from each other, but when watching one and then the other, you can notice similarities between the two. For example, Birdy's video has the character walking slowly and then flashbacks will appear and flash across the screen really fast in time with he beat. The past student has taken this and applied it to her video but has altered it to fit her music video better. The A2 past students work is really well done and if you didn't know that it was an amateur video you could believe it is the actual music video for Birdy's song. In some ways I think that this one is better than the professional, as the storyline for this is very emotional but not overly dramatic, and all the micro-elements, (camera, sound, editing and miss-en-scene), really create a link between the character and the audience, and make you feel all the emotions that the character is feeling at that time. Where as the professional music video has a bit of a random storyline about a party that happened the night before and is a flashback. There is a wide range of different camera shots and angles in both these music videos, and are also really good quality. There are a lot of close-ups of the main characters faces, when they are acting and singing, and this helps the audience to see the emotions that they are feeling. The mise-en-scene in both these music videos is also one of the really good points that I came across. In the professional video the costumes are really unique and keep the audience interested, and while the locations that they are in isn't many, only a big house and garden with a bonfire, it is still really interesting and effective. In the amateur video, even though the costumes are just everyday normal clothes, there are many locations, such as the forest, a field with lots of flowers in, a cemetery, and a house. This lighting is also really effective, as it reflects the feeling of the little girl fondly remember her father, with shades of soft yellow, pinks and gold, like sunset colours, when in the flashback of when her dad is dying, the lighting and colours a very muted and darkish, foreshadowing whats about to happen. The music is sync very well in both the music videos and doesn't look like both the singers are singing the songs exactly when they are supposed to. The editing is on point and really makes the video fit together in all the right places, and nothing ever looks out of place in both the videos. Post by Elise
Below is the 2 videos that I will be comparing. The left video is the original music video for 'Sleepwalking' by Bring Me The Horizon. The video on the right is the A2 media student's music video fro the same song
Whilst analysing the differences between the two videos, i found how different things made it more professional or more amateur. - there was a range of high key, low key, natural and artificial lighting as well as a wide range of locations such as a house/bedroom, a pub, streets, a rocky seaside/cliff, a forest. The student video only used high key bight studio and natural lighting and 2 locations that were a forest and studio. - the girl has 2 outfits in the official music video. the outfit is white in the start to connote a purity then when she is outside it is only blue and red. the red connotes a danger where as the blue connotes sadness. The band members outfits in the video are the sort of fashion that is expected but it also fits in with the pub setting where as the A2 video has the band n all black - The camera in the A2 video is shaky and most likely handheld whereas the professional one most likely has more expensive and professional equipment such as steadicams, dollys etc - There was more thought put into props for the professional video e.g. the rock that the girl carries around represents her depression. the A2 video used no props. -The editing in the professional one is more smooth and on point. All the filters match and the cuts are all in the right place. The editing in the A2 video is heavier but takes away from the shots with the twitch effect and the slow motion all the time. - The A2 video is mostly performance with a little narrative but they were kept very separate and didn't make sense together. The professional video was performance and conceptual with a bit or narrative. The band fit in well with it as the pub that their performance takes place in is within the narrative too. Post by Gina
Our target audience age category is 16-24. We have split this into two so we can analyse the different age category. The avatars above are to represent 20-24 year olds. The stereotypes for 20-something year olds are "inexperienced adults in university, who party and drink a lot, do stupid things, and get into trouble, and they are more concerned with relationships than getting far in life", this is what I found from google this age group. This is the other age group we have chosen for our target audience, 16-20 year olds. These are high school students that are probably just finishing school and moving on to colleges, sixth form or university. The stereotypes of this age group are that they are all "lazy" and "up to no good". Also that they are all addicted to social media and their phones. Both these age groups are in the demographic E column as this is where students are put, and our target audience is mostly aimed at students. Because of the studying, students are more likely to put in their earphones and listen to music, than people who aren't students. From researching, we have found that the people who mostly listen to Halsey are in fact female, so our music video will probably appeal to more girls then it will to boys. This is also why we have chose a 17 year old female actress to perform as the character in our music video. Post by Elise and Fatma
To help us decide who are target audience would be, we decided we were going to gather a wide range of results from different forms of primary research. First we gave a questionnaire to a number of people from the age categories of 16-24, 25-39, and 40+. This questionnaire is more of a generalised questionnaire about types of music videos and whether they like the genre we have chosen, instead of another questionnaire we are going to do specifically about Halsey, and her music/music videos. Questionnaire Results:Post by Elise and Gina
Below is a picture of the questionnaire that I have made and will give out to collect results on who our target audience is After giving out the surveys to 10 people, ageing from 16-51, and getting them back, I put the results into a pie chart from each question. The results of the survey were as expected. The people from 27-51 barely knew who Halsey was or didn't know at all. It was more males/masculine people in this age range that didn't know who Halsey was rather than the females/feminine people. Teens (16-19), showed to be more likely to know who Halsey was and be a fan of her, but only if they were already interested in Pop/Alternative/Indie/Rock music. People in their 20's seemed more open to Halsey's music, no matter what gender they were. Although they seemed more interested in her music, they were less likely to have watched Halsey's music videos, leading to the idea that they weren't 'fans' like the teen age group but still likes the music. This comes to the conclusion that Halsey's target audience is teens to early twenties and mostly girls/women/feminine people. Halsey is a fairly recent Alternative Pop artist that has gained popularity over the past 2 years. She is probably more of a social media icon than an everyday pop icon as she has rarely been in the UK top 40, unless she has featured on other peoples song e.g. Justin Bieber's 'The Feeling'. Thinking like this, I decided to do a few twitter polls as my personal twitter account has near to 4k followers therefore more people would participate, as well as having the results be closer to showing who Halsey's target audience is. Over 30 people ranged from late teens to early 20's voted in the 3 polls that were posted on my twitter. The results of this form of research was a lot more positive, leading us to believe that Halsey's target audience is online, in the Alternative scene and on social media platforms more than in the main pop charts and pop culture. Halsey is usually associated with other major alternative artists such as twenty one pilots. After doing these polls, I decided to look up tweets that contained the words 'haunting' and 'Halsey' in the same sentence. All of the tweets that came up were positive towards the song, showing that her target audience is favourable of Halsey's song Haunting, which we have chosen to do for our music video. Post by Gina
After doing this interview with a Halsey fan, we got a better idea of what her fans like about her videos and how they find out about them e.g. through social media, following Halsey. We found that a fan likes a narrative based video more as the New Americana video was her favourite which is all narrative and n performance. Also, she described a narrative video as what she imagined for the video for Haunting. Although this fan prefers more narrative based videos, Halsey's video for Ghost has more views on Youtube but has only a little performance and is mostly narrative. Post by Gina
