We will be going Digi-pak analysis' in order to pick up some inspiration for our own design as well as pointers on how to execute our to that of a professional standard. This will help us understand how to really sell the song through, not only the photography, but also the colours, font and layout. The Digi pak I have chosen to analyse is for Rihanna's album 'Loud'. As she is a well known artist it would make sense to analyse something of hers as she has a high standard of quality in her design layouts. This is the main image of the Digi Pak. The picture is a close up portrait shot of Rihanna's face to show her beauty and calm facial expression which could connote her elegance. The audience can straight away see the boldness of her red lipstick which gives out a 'sexy' feel to the album, and red hair. The main colour is red, red represents love and passion which also reflects her music the red hair and lips really stand out from the digipak. The name of the album is very minimal. The writing is white and white represent purity and love. the digipak does not show any other writing as the image mainly speaks for the album. Her name is also shown very subtle at the top and this is to show her fame, she doesn't need big writing for her name as people can see from the image that it is Rihanna. The front cover would be appealing for young females as they are attracted to her beauty which will also target the male audiences. The cover of the CD is a pale pink rose and this shows that Rihanna is not the only beautiful image of the cd but the music that can be played from the album too. The rose symbolises love as most songs of the album are about love and this gives the divi pak a theme of romance. Feminine colours are used for the digi pak for example red and pale pink which gives the idea that it is a feminine album and more appealing to the female audiences. This is the inside picture of the digipak and it shows a lot of emotion which relates to the front image of the album . The background shows a lot of red roses. The image is eye catching, the colour red is used again in this image and it could be seen from a male gaze as she is almost seen as a sex object as there is a lot red in the image. However the image is not too provocative as she is not showing much of her skin, but still attractive enough for her male audiences. Post by Fatma
Feedback: After presenting our pitch we spoke as a class and discussed some feedback from other class members. This helped us a lot as we are able to know what we need to work on and what was our strong points. In order for us to gain an understanding of what we even needed to accomplish we needed to listen to our class members. Positive: Costume choice- The choice of using black and white to juxtapose each other and show the contrast between happiness/life and sadness/death. It also helps with showing the difference in our narrative. What we need to work on:

I will be analysing past student music video (A grade) I have chosen to analyse this music video because the song is a very different genre to alternative which is the genre we have chosen. It'll be interesting to see what ideas we can take from this music video, the one idea we can take from this music video is the plot, which is that one of the friend dies. Mise En Scene- The first setting of the music video is an empty room with someone playing the piano. The piano is being played very softly which can reflect the sad meaning of the song. The clothing of the actors is very casual. all three characters are wearing shirts, jeans, jackets and trainers. also the hair and the costume put together makes them look like teenage boy. A forest had also been used, a forest has a connotation of a deep mystery as some people can find it quite scary as the song is dedicated to someone passing away. Throughout some of the music video there is good lighting as it was filmed during the day. the scenes which have to bright lighting are the scenes where the best friends have good times and spend a lot of time together which reflects a good mood for some parts of the song. Editing - There is a grey coloured effect at the first scene. The colour grey represents depression, and can also create sadness, a bit of loneliness and isolation. There is only a grey effect when one of the actors are on their own or the slow parts of the song this shows that there is a sad meaning and the sad bits of the song are in grey. Some shots of the music video are fast as some bits of the music video have rapping scenes however with the slow parts of the song there is a short duration. There is a continuity in the music video as each scene matches the next scene as it is a narrative based music video. in some parts of the music video there was also slow motion which creates a deeper meaning for the audience. The name of the artist and the name of the song also appears to be on the bottom left on the screen, this is to show people who the song is sung by and what the name of the song is so that it gets more attention. Another editing technique which the students have used is fading out the friend which passed away, this is so that the audience can get the plot that one of the friend has passed away. Camera work - The music video starts with a medium shot,so that the audience can see the setting which was just a room with the singer and a piano. It then goes onto a close up, this is so that we can see the just the actors face but can also see a bit of the piano. There is also a medium shot of the 2 friends together and this is shows that the two boys are good friends. Sound- Lip syncing is a very important aspect when editing a music video, however in this music video the lip syncing is perfectly times with the original song, this makes the A2 music video more professional. The genre of this music video is pop rap ballad. The visuals is also very important as the music video needs to be relevant to the visuals of the music video. For example in the original song Wiz Khalifa raps ' 'you were standing there by my side' and the image on the left the students stand next to each other and playing basketball, this shows that the visual relates to the lyrics. Post by Fatma. It was easy for us as a group to decide who we wanted to be in our music video. We have chosen a 17 year old girl called Chloe and we have chosen her because Halsey's main target audience is teenage girls so we knew that it would suit the music video well. Chloe is also an A-level drama student who is very confident in front of the camera and also very easy to work and also very mature so this makes our filming process easier and better. We are also using a 17 year old girl called katja. Katja is also in our group. The fact that she is in our group has made it easier for us to film because we know she is reliable as we had discussed her availability whilst discussing when we are going to film. We have used another 17 year old girl because it would make more sense in our music video as the two actresses are friends in the music video. Post by Fatma As a group we have listed a few locations where we are thinking of filming our music videos. Some locations we have planned to film are:
Forest - A forest has the connotation of being quite scary and reflecting on the title of the song 'haunting'. We would shoot at sunset so the scene is not completely dark. High key lighting would add a "Twilight" effect. To be using forest we do not need permission from anyone as it is a public place so we can use it whenever we want. However with this location there are few hazards for example as it is cold weather outside it can be quite cold and muddy so if we are filming someone could slip. The image on the right shows the bedroom we will be filming at. Shooting in a house location would make the narrative more realistic, following the girls average day-to-day life. For this location we would need permission from the owner of the house to see if we can film at their house. I have texted the person of the house that we are using. With this location there will be one hazard which is the stairs. As we are filming up the stairs with wires on the floor from the ring light, so we need to be careful around the stairs area as someone could fall down the stairs. The image on the right shows the text which i have sent to the person of the owner of the bedroom. Windsor and Eton bridge- We will be using the bridge for one of our scenes. We will be using it because we will be putting flashbacks in our song. The bridge is a good location to set our scene in. A bridge near the river is also where people go if they are upset and also one of the lines in the song is 'I was as pure as a river' this shows that a bridge near the river would have a meaning to the lyrics. For this location we also do not need permission as it is a public area and we can use it at anytime. One of the hazards of this location is that the bridge is made out of metal, and if it rains that day then someone could slip. Studio - Shooting the live performance scenes in a studio will be easy for us to create a realistic mise-en-scene with lighting. We had to ask for the Drama teachers permission to be using her drama studio and we had asked her through the school E-mail. In the drama studio it is going to be quite dark and the wires are going to be on the floor because in the drama studio they have lighting in there so anyone could trip in the dark over the wires. Post by Fatma. Our target audience age category is 16-24. We have split this into two so we can analyse the different age category. The avatars above are to represent 20-24 year olds. The stereotypes for 20-something year olds are "inexperienced adults in university, who party and drink a lot, do stupid things, and get into trouble, and they are more concerned with relationships than getting far in life", this is what I found from google this age group. This is the other age group we have chosen for our target audience, 16-20 year olds. These are high school students that are probably just finishing school and moving on to colleges, sixth form or university. The stereotypes of this age group are that they are all "lazy" and "up to no good". Also that they are all addicted to social media and their phones. Both these age groups are in the demographic E column as this is where students are put, and our target audience is mostly aimed at students. Because of the studying, students are more likely to put in their earphones and listen to music, than people who aren't students. From researching, we have found that the people who mostly listen to Halsey are in fact female, so our music video will probably appeal to more girls then it will to boys. This is also why we have chose a 17 year old female actress to perform as the character in our music video. Post by Elise and Fatma
I will be analysing the Mise- En- Scene of three different songs which are within the genre that we have chosen. The Mise- En- Scene is a very important aspect of our music video as the costume, lighting and props will show what our song is about. Twenty One pilots - heathens This is a chosen alternative song. which i will be analysing. This is so that we as a group can see what ideas we can take from the music videos and what we won't be ideas we'll be taken from the music video. Heathens is on the soundtrack of the suicide squad movie. The song was recorded through Atlantic records and Warner Bros records. The song was written by Tyler Joseph. Heathens peaked at number two in the US billboards. Mise En Scene analysis. The first prop that is being used is the computers. There are lots of computers being used at once. This is so that the audience can get a sense that the jail is very scary and people are being monitored all the time. There is also a cage with a human in it this is so that people can think that the person inside the cage is almost like an animal and it also shows that the actress has got a mental problem and that the jail makes people ill. The costumes being used is just a typical jail outfit. which is a full orange bodysuit and this is to reflect the place of recording which is a prison. The lighting of the music video is very dark this can show that there is fear, evil and mystery which would make sense as he is in prison. There is also a shadow reflecting his face which makes it seem like he has done something bad and also that he is not innocent. There is also a red lighting when the drummer is on camera. The color red connotes danger and also represents fire and blood and this will make the audience think that the song is very intense. From this song we have had some ideas for our own music videos. One of the things we were inspired by is the lighting which is quite dark and also the color which represents the mood of the song. The second alternative song that i will be analyzing through the mise-en-scene is Let it go by James Bay The song was included in his album called 'same name'.Let it go song made it to number.16 in the top 100 billboard music chart and peaked number.8 in Australia . The outfit of James Bay is very casual. He is wearing a leather jacket which connotes that he is not innocent he is also wearing a hat and a t shirt. This shows the audience that the music video is relaxing and slow. The setting of the music video is a room in a house. The room is quite empty and does not have much color in it. This is to show that the song is not a very positive song. When James is singing the audience can see the air when he is breathing. This shows the audience that the setting is very cold and not very comfortable. There is a highlight down the whole of his face, body and a bit of the chair he is sitting on. This shows the viewer a glimpse of him; the lighting is dark and quite difficult to see detail. This may be representative of him trying to share only a small part of himself. The lighting of the music video is dark throughout the whole song. This shows that the song might be leading up to something more negative. There is also fire in the background when he is going downstairs. Fire symbolizes danger and war. The idea that we have taken from this song is the outfit. As a group we have decided that the singer in our music video will be dressed casually as done in this song. Post by Fatma
Auteur translates to author in french. In the music and film industry it means that a directors film reflects their creative vision. many auteurs have a original style which creates a status for them and gives their music video a personal and unique stamp.auteurs can have their own signature in a number of ways this could be through - transitions -location -actors An example of an auteur is: -Colin Tilley is a music video director who works with many well known celebrities such as justin bieber, nick minaj, chris brown Kendrick lamar and DJ Snake. Colin Tilley has a number of ways he creates a status for himself:
Chris Brown FT Justin Bieber- Next to you. This image shows that Colin Tilley sometimes puts his name out before the music video. This is used so that the audience knows that he directed the music video and it also shows the kinds of artist he works with in this case it is hip hop and R&B. Colin Tilley also tends to use different colors in some scenes of the music video for example. In this song there is a black and white color . The colors reflects on the meaning behind the song for example the dark colors can show that its is not a happy song. In the songs that colin tilley produces there is always a dancing scene. In this image it shows Chris Brown dancing whilst there is fire in the background. There is also a very dark and gloomy background this is so that the audience can focus on the artist. The dancing in Colin Tilley music videos is normally Hip Hop. Justin Bieber- ConfidentAgain in this music video there is a very dark background while the artist is dancing with very expensive clothing. Models are always being used in Colin Tilley's music video. This is so that the audience are familiar with the people inside the music video and so the song receives more attention. This song is also filmed in a studio just like most colin Tilleys songs which he has directed. In most of Collin Tileys song the women are shown as very dominant. They normally wear tight revealing clothing. Again in this music video there is another long shot of the artist singing and dancing with a very dark background. Also while he is dancing the camera is moving towards towards him , Colin Tilley uses this technique so that the audience can look closely at the artist dancing. Post by Fatma
There are 3 different types of music videos which are: Narrative based video- This is when a music video is focused on a storyline and or a music video which is featured in a film. A song example of a narrative music video which has a story is Sam Smith I'm not the only one. this is a song about infidelity. a women who makes her husband breakfast and pretending she's happy. While her husband goes to the bar with another women there are shots of the wife crying in a car with make up down her face as she knows about her husband cheating. There are lots of parallel editing between her crying in the car and him cheating in the bar. The women then goes to the liquor store to drink her problems away and then she goes back to the house and starts burning some of his possessions. At the end of the music video she welcomes him back home as if nothing had happened. Another example of a narrative based video is songs which are produced in films an example of this is Beyonce Check on it. This is where she had sang a song for the Pink Panther film in 2006. Only very famous singers make songs for films this is because they know that more people will watch the movie of they promote it through a song. Performance based video- This features the band or artist performing either to the camera or to an audience. A song example of this is 5 seconds of summer, she looks so perfect. In this is music video the 5 members are just performing in front of the camera with their instruments. Concept based video - This means that the music video is based around only one idea. This is often consists of one concept. Concept based video can seem very random and meaningless and its also mainly abstract. concept based music videos can be very unexpected as you don't know what will come next. The sequences also seem very random and weird however that keeps the music video interesting. A song example of a concept based music video is Tinie Tempah pass out. I have chosen this song because it is very abstract as sometimes there are lyrics on the screen, speakers or the singer in a black background. The fact that there is always something different on the screen shows that it is a concept based video as the music video has no meaning behind it. This song is called 'she looks so perfect' by 5 Seconds of Summer. It is mainly a performance based video as the group is just performing in front of the camera. However some bits of the music video shows a concept based music video with random actors in it. This mage is a concept based video. Looking at the picture it is clear that the music video has no real meaning as it has a black background. Post by Fatma
