A title sequence is a way that films or television programs present their title, key production and cast members, or both, utilizing conceptual visuals and sound. It typically includes (or begins) the text of the opening credits, and helps establish the setting and tone of the program/film. It may consist of live action, animation, music, still images, and/or graphics. The title on the opening of the film Mr and Mrs Smith a film which stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as a bored upper-middle class married couple surprised to learn that they are both assassins hired by competing agencies to kill each other. The font on the text is very sophisticated and plain which is unusual for the film as it’s a mix between romantic and comedic which would stereotypically connote red and bright colours. The positive about these opening titles and background is that it doesn’t give too m much away to the audience and leaves them waiting and wanting to find out more to continue watching this gives off enigma to the audience. The titles don’t give the audience any idea of what to expect. The text is professional and the same on each clip this give the audience a sense of maturity and a unisex film as the colour stereotypically doesn’t connect to certain gender.

We thought it was important to do some research on the content, style and feature of the films openings to identify techniques and incorporate the features into our short thriller opening sequence.
Different sub genres of thrillers have different openings it’s very important that the opening sequnence engages the audience into the story line. Opening sequences highlight the sub genre and what the movie is about. As I researched in more depth I realised that the opening sequences of the two main sub genres if thrillers; action and psychological. The opening sequences of thrillers are normally very vague and intense most of the time the audience is left to their own imagination. Action In action thrillers the scene starts with fast paced music in the background, jump cuts the actors are normally doing something interesting this keeps the audience want to keep watching. The scene is shot an unknown location and the opening sequence if very vague, which keeps the viewers on edge. The special features used connote to action. For example, the character is holding a weapon, which connotes to danger and action. Psychological Psychological thrillers start of with dark lighting and intense music the camera movement is normally very slow and with slow cuts. The opening sequences of psychological genres are normally very intense to keep the audience hooked. The content is very vague within the scene and the story unravels as the movies continue. ![]() Vertigo: Alfred Hitchcock uses a variety of thriller codes and conventions in his work to convey themes, messages and theories. Audiences first witness a black screen with non diegetic music playing in the background, which gets louder and louder as the scene starts to run through. The uneasy tempo of the music presents to the audience that something isn't right, creating mystery and uncertainty. We are quickly shown that the main character Scotty suffers from acrophobia when he and another police officer chase a criminal across some rooftops, as Scotty slips and nearly falls to his death, before grabbing onto the guttering. When the other policeman attempts to help Scottie, his fear of heights unfortunately paralyses him. A dolly zoom is used to achieve the affect of vertigo, as Scottie looks beneath him at the ground. Lighting can play a key part in determining the mood and tone of a film. A nice, warm, bright light implies that the tone of the film, or a particular scene in the film, is a happy and positive scene with an enthusiastic atmosphere. A dark, gloomy, dull light can show the opposite effect, leaving the audience with a sad, depressed and dreary impression of the characters. Alfred Hitchcock has filmed the first scene late at night as it is dark and it shows that the main character Scotty is a nervous and anxious character. Alfred Hitchcock also uses different camera angles and shots in "Vertigo" to represent the characters and where or how they stand in situations. Different angles and shots can imply things like social status, dominance and submissiveness. When Scotty is hanging from the guttering, a closeup of his face is taken to show his fear and anxiety of heights. The mise-enscene also conveys the true personalities of the characters. Colours can show moods, like red for example can represent danger and blue can indicate coldness. Scotty is often seen in grey, brown and black to show his state of mind, which is sombre, confused and off balance. These are among the different ways Alfred Hitcock uses camera angles, shots and mise-en-scene to imply theories to audiences. We decided to give out 10 questionnaires to people around our chosen age audience. this helped us to get a idea of what to include in our opening sequence that we know the audience will like for example we known hey like to be disorientated when watching thriller films.
As a group we decided to shoot film our opening sequence at an 'Xstudios' member's house which, would be used a Camilla's house. We decided to use Jenna's house because everyone who was available to film is able to get there and the actresses are also able to get there. We will mainly be using the bedroom and we will turn it into a stalkers room which the room allows us to do as it is a good size.
We also considered to film in a hotel room however it would be hard to access and it would not look like a typical teenagers room. We feel that the better option is using Jenna's house as it is local and convenient. Camilla is the opposite to any other character in the sequence she is clever, obsessive and dependent on Serena however, she has split personalities when she is around others she tries to fit in by wearing casual clothes but tends to be dark and dull coloured clothes as she is very troubled behind her smile. Below is the outfit she will be wearing in our opening sequence. This juxtaposes with serena pure white outfit to show their differences.
Serena is very stereotypical girly teenager she is mature, intelligent and independent however, is completely oblivious to the situation that she finds herself towards the end of the opening sequence. Below is the outfit she will be expected to wear throughout the opening sequence to show that she is very friendly and outgoing and dressed like a normal teenager would as this is quite casual and plain colours paired with trainers.
As a group we thought it was important to know our target audience.
As a group we have decided that our thriller would be aimed at both males and females (but mostly female) from the age of 15 to 21. We have decided that our age chosen age group would be able to relate to the plot of a teenage girls being stalked. The age group is from 15 and above because it may contain graphic scenes, violence and offensive language which would not be suitable for younger viewers. As a group we think that people over the age of 21 may not be interested in the storyline or genre of the film and the people over the age of 21 will no longer be able to relate to the teenage life. |
