Looking at film posters is going to help us make our poster. I especially like the dark colours in this poster, which we will probably incorporate in our poster. The title is written in a very bright white, so it stands out against the poster. The font of the writing is a childish scrawl, which represents the "innocence" of the character. The writing at the top is also in white and is written to intrigue the audience and therefore make them want to watch the film. "Can you keep a secret?" is written underneath in a red that matches the ribbon round her neck, showing a link, which turns out to be an important part of the storyline. The image takes up most of the poster, so the audience can see the characters face close up. At first glance the image just looks like a normal child, however it is set up to look like a criminal mugshot. If the audience were to look closely at the face, they may notice that she looks older than she really is.

We are particularly interested in Psychological Thrillers as we enjoy watching them and feel that they are a good way of showing suspense. This is most likely the sub genre that we are going to choose for our piece. If we don't do this we will do Supernatural Thrillers as these are also quite interesting, and something that we watch, however there are certain supernatural effects in this type of Thriller that may be very challenging to recreate.
We created a mind map in order to explore and examine the sub genres in order to see the different aspects of each one and decide which we liked best. While Caitlin liked conspiracy thrillers, Georgia liked the idea of an apocalyptic type disaster thriller because of it's connotations and dark atmosphere. There are many codes and conventions of thrillers which can help you identify the genre of a film and know that it is a thriller. Mirrors Mirrors are used in thrillers as the characters reflections can represent their inner self and soul. Mirrors can show darkness and a different side to the character. An example of this shown is in the film 'Black Swan'. We like the idea of using mirrors in our opening sequence, however we also feel that this could be quite a difficult task to get right as we would have to film it without showing the camera in the mirror. Shadows Shadows are quite similar to low key lighting and are used as a convention of a thriller film. They are used to represent the darkness of someone or an object. Shadows can also have suspense as you know that something is going to happen once you see a shadow. We could try this by filming in a dark room, but having some light on the subject to form shadows however this may also be quite a difficult one to get right. Obtrusive Editing Quick shots are used frequently in thrillers to show tension and suspense. They often appear in 'thrilling' scenes where you quickly get a shot at something scary. This is very effective and would be fairly easy to recreate. It is very likely we will end up using this in our film opening. Flashbacks Flashbacks show a sense of time and space which confuses the audience. The characters are telling their past stories to the audience by flashing back time. Flashbacks include when a character remembers their childhood. This is very effective and would make quite a good film opening.
There are many other codes and conventions featured in thriller films such as low key lighting, quick cuts, camera angles and music.
Low angle shot This shot shows the object from a lower angle than the eye line. It is often used to show power of a character or that they are important. Low angle shots are very powerful in the way they can emphasise just how scary or intimidating a villain is. This could make the actors in the film and the audience feel weak and insignificant. Close ups This shows a certain part of someones face. It can be used to show a certain detail that may be otherwise missed. This is used to see the reactions on the actors face. This shot shows the most emotion from the character and captures the important details from the scene. Oblique angle The oblique angle consist of the camera being tilted the making the shot look askew. This creates a feeling of chaos and uneasiness. Establishing Shot An establishing shot shows where the characters are and where the film is set. An example of this would be a wide shot of Paris. Reaction shot This is used to show someone reacting to seeing or hearing something. This angle is used so you can see the actors expressions. High angle/Birds eye The camera is positioned from high up, looking down on the subject. This is mainly used to make a character look small and therefore weak and vulnerable. Over the shoulder shot The over the shoulder shot is used so it allows the audience to feel like they are in the scene. This can also be used when there is someone scary behind the actor and you can see the actors reaction when they turn around. The camera angles we are hoping to use are over the shoulder shot, close ups and low angle shots. We like these because they are quite simple, however they also look very effective.
A thriller is designed to keep the viewer or reader on the edge of their seat with suspension and action. It is a large genre, as it often overlaps with other genres, for example mysteries are often thrillers. Thrillers usually involve lots of plot twist to keep the audience unaware of what is going to happen. Often, thrillers have very complex plots to keep the audience's attention on the film for the whole time, afraid that if they look away, they'll miss something. The dictionary definition of a thriller is: "a novel, play, or film with an exciting plot, typically involving crime or espionage." An example of a thriller is "Scream"
The exercise went well overall. things that were particularly good include our shot types, as we included all the types that we could think of. We were very organised, we made a storyboard, a script and a shot list so that we knew exactly what we were doing when it came to filming. We spent a lot of time planning before we filmed so that we could make sure the piece would include elements that each individual person wanted.
However there were certain aspects that we could have improved on, for example, when putting the clips together, we realised that the positions of both the actresses and camera had changed a little bit each time. To avoid this in the future, we could put markers on the ground, so that we are stood in the same place for each shot. We felt that the video was quite short, so we should take that into account in the future when we are planning a piece. We found that the video's sound was quite hard to hear sometimes, as the camera picked up the sounds of the wind and also planes; to avoid this, we could film on a less windy day, or even plan our next piece so that most of the filming takes place inside.
