The first opening sequence of a thriller I will evaluate is "Se7en". ![]() Here we have a macro shot of the book emerging from the light and it looks as if nothing has been written in it. ![]() And now the book is shown to be coming out of the dark with images that looks to connotes a frightening feeling. At the start of the sequence, we see a close up shot of the background of book pages, however soon after the book now turns into more like a diary with a picture of hands. the hands look like they have been tortured and they look like they are begging for mercy. Between the scenes, it shows a contrast of how the book stands out from the light but then the picture of hands are shown to come out of the darkness, which connotes that the book has been contrasted from being plain to something erie. ![]() Now we have a medium close up of the title of the film with the subject of the film behind the title. The writing looks gruesome, and it includes the number 7, which makes it create an effect of the title and it doesn't look too plain, which stands out as the film is called "Seven" but there is the number 7 written in the title, therefore its makes it a creative title. The audience is shown different camera angles of the killer writing and adding images to the book of dead victims, is including quotations of something from a book and is crossing out words. There is a lot writing in the diary that could connote the killer has researched a slot of killing methods for his victims. Overall this trailer gives a lot of suspense to the audience and it gives a feeling of suspense. There are many ways it can give suspense, for example if you listen to the music, it sounds scary, how the book is being written, images and letters are added, e.t.c. I think watching this opening sequence has inspired our group to come up with something like this opening sequence as it shows lots of close ups about the subject in detail.

The basics of narratives
1. Circular : which is the first and ending scene is the same. 2. Episodic : different episodes of their lives in different scene shots 3. Linear: constant story told throughout the film. It uses to principle of Beginning , middle and end. Later on the lesson we gained information on how narratives are viewed: restricted narrative and omniscient narrative. Our teacher demonstrated what they are and how they are used. A restricted narrative involves a narrative that only allows us to know what they characters know. where as omniscient narrative allows us to know more about the characters and their situations than they know themselves. For example... a girl is in the shower unaware of the lose killer after her however the audience does know and so react. We will apply this knowledge to our planning of our thriller film opening sequence.
![]() Here is the scene of the opening in Carrie. This is a medium long shot of a distressed women screeching in pain surrounded in blood, this illustrates the pain she's in. She carries a screaming baby in her hand suggesting she was suffering with labour pain. Overall her expression appears to be vulnerable.
The tile appears in a blood red colour font and then the edit effects of the letters turns to blood leaking up wards which disregards gravity connoting supernatural element which hints the film is supernatural.
Sky Fall![]() The actions in this medium long shot represents sexuality. We could suggest this film has sexual content of typical high school students kissing, here we know that this thriller is based in high school therefore its targeted to teenagers. In the first scene of the opening we can see James Bond falling down to the water in slow motion ,then we can see that they have used affects for the ground opening . Props such as guns, knifes, women, blood and target shots suggest skyfall is a action act film pact. The woman figure connotes that the film is sexual and has women in the film. The editing effect of kaleidoscope is constancy used in the clip using images such as women, plants houses etc. This affect makes it appear unusual which foreshadows the film. There's a constant fast motion of abstract colours emerging in this clip, which deeply attracts the viewers attention. This illusion and effects gave us inspiration to use these in our final piece.

As well as this there is a dark figure holding a knife in his right hands which connotes a killer involved in this film. In addition the colours in the binoculars the main colours are red and yellow which connotes fire and the red resembles blood as its linked with the knife. This image is large and makes it eye catching for the viewer. The slogan "every killer lives next door to someone" created tension towards the reader as its saying that anyone could be a killer and you are next to be killed. This grips the audience to see how and it draws their attention. The colour scheme is very dark as with a black background. The face is white as well as the text which contrast well with the background as the black bounces with the white well. The tile of the film 'Disturbia' is written in lower case which gives a softer touch to the poster and its positioned against the mans mouth suggesting that he perhaps its the victim.

![]() This is a close up of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lector in the horror thriller Hannibal. The image makes the man look quite dangerous as his eyes are focused directly into the camera, almost as if the killer is looking at the audience. This builds up tension as the killer is peering at the viewer. the affect of having the killer behind bars and the bars being in the foreground show how the killer is imprisoned but the affect of having the bars as blurry makes them look as though they are fragile and can break easily, meaning that the killer is able to escape, which he does later on in the film. ![]() In Thriller films the camera is usually focused on the protagonists expressions and body language. Angles such as facial close up shots and mid – range shots. An example of a close up was used in a film called Band of Brothers, in the film there is a close up of the mans face after he has been shot, showing that he is in pain. Band of Brothers was made in 2001.The focus on emotions and body language helps to show tension, and helps the audience to feel as if they are in the film and gets them to start asking questions. Another Camera Movement is tracking, this is a fast paced camera movement, which can also be known as a Dolly shot or just a Dolly. These shots have been used in films such as Goodfellas, where the camera is quickly tracking through the kitchen of the Copacabana. This film was created by Martin Scorsese in 1990 .This makes the audience more tense, nervous and makes their heart beat fast, as they know that something may happen next due to the fast pace. This 'thrilling' feeling is commonly found in Thrillers. ![]() The first movie poster I will analyse is 'Orphan.' I decided to analyse this thriller poster as this could give us inspiration to our thriller ideas, e.g, horror thriller and it could help us with our film poster for the opening sequence. I can tell its a thriller because the main thing I would look at and immediately think its a thriller, is the girl in the poster. She gives many hints to the audience this movie is a thriller, for example, the way she looks. Her facial expression gives a sinister look and the eyes are very dark and normally in thriller posters, they use mainly dark colours, like red, black, grey, e.t.c, so the girl's eyes are very dark and spooky. The girl also doesn't look very normal, for example, her clothing is very old and the choker necklace is very thick and is also a dark colour, like a very dark red. The girl in the poster looks like there is a back story to her life. The writing of the poster gives a thriller side to the movie. The title 'Orphan' gives a sharp edge to the writing, and normally in thrillers, the style of the writing is mainly included in thrillers. Finally caption on the top of the poster gives a hint, as it gives away what the movie will be about, e.g, its hints that film may be about an orphan, who may be called Esther, and that there could be something wrong with her. Before we decide on the style of our opening sequence we need to understand what exactly a thriller is. A Thriller could be a novel, play or film which revolves around anticipation and suspense. The main aim of a Thriller genre is to keep the audience alert and at the edge of their seats. The leading character(s) is usually given a problem which they have to solve such as a mystery, an escape or a mission. Even though Thrillers may have sub genres for example psychological thrillers, the protagonist always faces some form of danger. the tension builds up gradually throughout the film and leads up to an edgy climax.
