I will be outlining the media code and conventions of the thriller 'What Lies Beneath' a swell as analyzing the opening sequence and suggest how sound and camera work are used to portray the elements of a thriller. From this analysis our group will apply some of key aspects in which a typical thriller consists of in to our final thriller open sequence.
Later on the lesson we looked at a characters in narrative structures and how they are structured, so we studied Vladimir Propp theory for an insight of characters that are structured in films. Vladimir Propp was a 1920's literary critic and a scholar who founded the idea that a certain type of character was to be used in every narrative structure. His theory has influenced many filmmakers to writing and producing successful narratives. Propp also suggested that all fairy tales follow a specific narrative structure. Propp suggested that every narrative has eight different character types: The hero, the false hero, the princess, the father, the helper, the villain, the donor and the dispatcher. Example used in Enchanted. This would guide us to select the characters when for planning for our thriller opening sequence. Tzvetan Todorov
For our location we gained inspiration from these photographs, and we will use some of the locations in our final opening sequence production. The photos of the horror locations that we have found are mostly used by other horror films , we believe that by using these locations our audience will get the understanding of our genre as well as our film would be more realistic and scary.
Due to the many age categories that your film could fall into, it is crucial that it must be concluded as to what age rating the film will be before it is release in ordeer to attract the correct target audience.
Extracts from the opening scene foreshadows the narrative. Audience gain an insight of what the film will be like from the opening sequence of the film therefore the audience would know what to expect.
The basics of narratives
1. Circular : which is the first and ending scene is the same. 2. Episodic : different episodes of their lives in different scene shots 3. Linear: constant story told throughout the film. It uses to principle of Beginning , middle and end. Later on the lesson we gained information on how narratives are viewed: restricted narrative and omniscient narrative. Our teacher demonstrated what they are and how they are used. A restricted narrative involves a narrative that only allows us to know what they characters know. where as omniscient narrative allows us to know more about the characters and their situations than they know themselves. For example... a girl is in the shower unaware of the lose killer after her however the audience does know and so react. We will apply this knowledge to our planning of our thriller film opening sequence.
![]() Here is the scene of the opening in Carrie. This is a medium long shot of a distressed women screeching in pain surrounded in blood, this illustrates the pain she's in. She carries a screaming baby in her hand suggesting she was suffering with labour pain. Overall her expression appears to be vulnerable.
The tile appears in a blood red colour font and then the edit effects of the letters turns to blood leaking up wards which disregards gravity connoting supernatural element which hints the film is supernatural.
Sky Fall![]() The actions in this medium long shot represents sexuality. We could suggest this film has sexual content of typical high school students kissing, here we know that this thriller is based in high school therefore its targeted to teenagers. In the first scene of the opening we can see James Bond falling down to the water in slow motion ,then we can see that they have used affects for the ground opening . Props such as guns, knifes, women, blood and target shots suggest skyfall is a action act film pact. The woman figure connotes that the film is sexual and has women in the film. The editing effect of kaleidoscope is constancy used in the clip using images such as women, plants houses etc. This affect makes it appear unusual which foreshadows the film. There's a constant fast motion of abstract colours emerging in this clip, which deeply attracts the viewers attention. This illusion and effects gave us inspiration to use these in our final piece.
